INSPIRATION

Each watch embodies an unique narrative from The Faroe Islands.
Inspired by Faroese culture and tradition.

Tórshavn Cathedral

Three of the timepieces draw their inspiration from Tórshavn Cathedral, the heart of the Faroese capital. Niels, the designer, was fascinated by the aesthetic and architectural elements of the cathedral. His personal bond to the church runs deep, seeing as he was baptized, confirmed and married within its walls. Built in 1788 and preserved in its original form ever since, the cathedral stands as one of Tórshavn’s most cherished landmarks, with its iconic tower as a defining feature of the city. To honour this heritage, the clock from the cathedral’s tower has been reimagined and made wearable, forming the centrepiece of the watch’s design.

Faroese knitting

The women’s watches celebrate the rich heritage of Faroese knitting. Considering that in The Faroe Islands the sheep outnumber the people, it is no wonder that wool has been such a big part of Faroese culture. The star motif featured in the women’s collection is inspired by a pattern found in “Føroysk Bindingarmynstur,” a book by Hans Marius Debes. In the 1930s Debes traveled across the islands, gathering all the old traditional knitting patterns and preserving them in print. The book is still a best selling classic, with over 18000 units sold – a remarkable achievement for a nation of such modest size. For centuries, wool has kept the Faroese people warm and now the Faroe Time watch can play a small part in this legacy.

Thor’s Hammer/Mjølnir and the Faroese flag

As with the men’s watches, the clock in the tower of Tórshavn Cathedral is incorporated in this open face pocket watch. However, a significant detail stands out in this design: Mjølnir, the hammer of Thor from Norse mythology. Thor’s hammer also appears in Tórshavn’s logo as the city’s name literally means “Thor’s Harbour”. Niels therefore chose to grace the watch with this subtle detail, paying tribute to his roots in the city.

Another key feature is the Faroese flag motif, delicately rendered in fine lines across the back of the watch. This detail highlights the watch’s suitability for the vest of the Faroese traditional costume for men, while also making it a refined accessory for a modern suit vest.

The pocket watch is crafted with a sapphire crystal, subtly curved to enhance its elegance and sophistication, combining tradition with contemporary design.

New designs!

The Faroe Time watches have been on the market for a few years, prompting the decision to introduce new designs. Three new timepieces have been introduced to the Knitting Pattern series, each crafted with a smaller case and encircled by finely set zirconia stones. The stones are carefully embedded rather than glued, ensuring both durability and superior quality. As with all Faroe Time designs, the watches are equipped with Swiss movement and sapphire crystal for lasting precision and clarity. The star motif, composed of fine stripes, is a tribute to the black stripes in the skirt of the traditional Faroese women’s national costume.

Sóljan, the National Flower
As something entirely new, a square design has now been created. A small and elegant women’s watch, adorned with inlaid zirconia stones for a subtle touch of brilliance. At the heart of the design lies a meaningful detail—the national flower of the Faroe Islands, the Sólja (marsh marigold), delicately placed on the second hand. Its name is thought to come from “sun and eye” or “sun and islands,” while in latin it translates as “yellow flower that loves wetlands.” The Sólja thrives particularly well in the Faroese wetlands and can be seen almost everywhere across the islands. Whether as sun-eyes or sun-islands, there is no doubt that this golden flower graces the Faroese landscape most beautifully in early summer. And now, the Sólja also adorns the new square Faroe Time watches.
